Game developer creates games for doctors | Ep. 161
For years, there existed a church and state separation between the world of video games and business training. Even concepts of ‘gamification’ haven’t much moved the needle when it comes to figuring out new ways to train people beyond papers, lectures and presentations. But with better technology now available, businesses can create “games” that will offer better training and education for workers. Keith Shaw chats with Sam Glassenberg, CEO of medical games company Level Ex, about what is causing this shift in the market.

Apple's AI: ‘personal intelligence’ | Ep. 160
Просмотров 16022 часа назад
Apple finally enters the artificial intelligence space with its ‘personal intelligence’ tools - what does this mean for the market, competitors and, most importantly, users of Apple products? Will consumers who have been saying mostly ‘meh’ to AI now start using the tools? Computerworld’s Ken Mingis and Macworld’s Mike Simon join the show to discuss Apple’s AI announcements from WWDC 24, includ...

Nvidia becomes a $3T company based on its latest AI chips (with Intel and AMD also in the game), leading the AI hype machine to go into overdrive. But at the same time, some are suggesting that the bubble is about to burst, and that AI investments may not pan out as users feel less enthusiastic. Computerworld contributing columnist and author Mike Elgan joins the show to discuss these and other...
Does age discrimination exist in the tech industry? | Ep. 158

While the technology job market remains vibrant and strong for many workers, people over the age of 50 are finding it more difficult to get a new job, or navigate past the layers of hiring with the institution of new AI screening tools. Between having an AI tool that recommends crazy suggestions like putting glue on pizza and a “leak” around how its search engine works, Google is facing lots of criticism about its technology and operations. Why computing now feels like ‘disposable technology’ | Ep. 156

As computing has developed over the past four decades, we increasingly see products designed to be more ‘disposable’ rather than upgradeable or made to last longer. However, there are still bright spots within the ecosystem that allow consumers to get more out of their devices or extend their life. Keith chats with Larry O’Connor, founder and CEO of Other World Computing, about these issues, as...

I do not believe of what I'm hearing here. The digital twin idea has been around for decades. The oil industry has been doing it for years and has indeed helped make unconventional plays competitive with conventional. AI has been integrated too but it is not revolutionary as this guy suggests. Tbh this sounds like typical tech spin. I think AI is starting to be exposed as more hype so the tech industry needs the next thing to keep idiots buying stocks that are already at greater than 40 P/E. And all just in time for the next round of printing. Remember big data, VR, VE, driverless cars, block chain...

Age discrimination in the tech industry affects both younger and older professionals, creating a complex issue that hinders career growth and innovation. Younger workers, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, often struggle to advance due to older employees, sometimes perceived as less adaptable, remaining in their positions longer. This reluctance to retire can stifle upward mobility and economic competitiveness. Conversely, older workers face biases that paint them as less innovative, leading to fewer opportunities despite their experience. Addressing ageism requires balanced, inclusive policies that value contributions from all age groups, fostering a dynamic workforce where experience and innovation thrive. If this lack of agility affects their performance, they should retire or transition into more suitable roles. There is no shame in doing so.

LinkedIn recently had an issue with 1 group posing as others, spamming the same job description to thousands (22000 positions) over and over again. It took nearly 2 months for LinkedIn to finally stop their postings for anything from the group as they really were abusing the platform with the garbage but LinkedIn was so slow to address the core rot in that group.

There is no question that looking for a job in tech is super time consuming these days. Very important to read the requirements carefully, tweak your verbiage to match what is in the ad, write a custom cover letter every time (if one is even an option). I used a service to help match the words/skills between the job posting and my resume. Also, use common sense. If you are a "mature" job hunter, drop the dates on your education if you can. Don't include 30 years of job history. Don't include DOB or hobbies - these are just opportunities for them to eliminate you. I did most of my job search through LinkedIn Premium and actually got pretty good results even looking for a Remote only position. This was a year ago, and things are obviously a bit different now but regardless, this is pretty much the bare minimum you have to do these days to get through the automated screening process to even get your resume to a person. Best of luck to all of you!!

I make a point of encouraging everyone to shut down and turn off their devices to engage with family and friends as much as possible. Most of us attend the gym daily during the week and for some that live solo, they are encouraged to dine out or meet up with someone for coffee, lunch or a walk. Work-life balance is crucial here at our company. Thanks for discussing this very important topic.

Unsurprisingly, it's easier for the terrorists to lock you out of your own system than it is to gain access to your system. They might not have access to your system. But, in different vein: If you completely rewrite your your system to back before your access was lost, the previous vulnerability is still present and you may not be able to determine when the system was compromised.
